Preparing for Success: Tips for Your First Modelling Agency Interview in Australia

Embarking on a modelling career is an exciting journey, and the initial interview with a modelling agency is a crucial step. For aspiring models in Canberra or anywhere in Australia, this guide will help you prepare and make a lasting impression.

1. Research the Agency

Before your interview, take the time to research the agency. Understand their values, the type of models they represent, and their recent campaigns. This knowledge will help you tailor your responses and show that you are genuinely interested in working with them.

2. Prepare Your Portfolio

Your portfolio is your visual resume. Ensure it is up-to-date with your best work, showcasing a variety of looks and styles. Include high-quality images that highlight your versatility and unique features. If you have any tear sheets or published work, make sure to include those as well. You can showcase your portfolio either digitally on an iPad or in a printed format with A4 colour and black-and-white images neatly organised in a professional portfolio folder. It’s also useful to have a printed Comp Card ready to go, so you can leave a physical card with the agency with all of your key statistics and contact information.

TIP - Your social media and online presence are integral parts of your portfolio! Agencies will look you up online, so make sure to clean up and present yourself professionally before your interview.

3. Dress the Part

First impressions matter. Choose an outfit that is simple, stylish, and fits well. Avoid overly flashy or distracting clothing. For women, a fitted pair of jeans and a plain top can work well, paired with heels you are comfortable walking in. For men, well-fitted jeans and a plain shirt are a good choice. Remember, the focus should be on you, not your clothes.

4. Practice Your Walk and Poses

Confidence is key in modelling. Practice your runway walk and poses before the interview. For females - ensure you practice your walk in the heels you are wearing on the day of your interview! This will help you feel more comfortable and poised during any on-the-spot demonstrations. Consider practicing in front of a mirror or recording yourself to review your performance.

5. Be Ready to Answer Common Questions

Modelling agencies often ask questions to understand your personality, experience, and commitment. Be prepared to answer questions such as:

  • Why do you want to be a model?

  • What type of modelling are you interested in?

  • Do you have any previous modelling experience?

  • How do you handle criticism and feedback?

  • Are you willing to travel for work?

  • What is your availability?

  • What type of modelling are you hoping to do?

  • Are there any types of modelling you wish to avoid?

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?

  • What made you interested in our agency in particular?

These questions help agencies gauge your commitment, flexibility, and fit for their specific needs. Preparing thoughtful answers can make a strong impression during your interview.

6. Showcase Your Personality

Agencies are looking for models who are not only photogenic but also professional and easy to work with. Be polite, enthusiastic, and genuine. Let your personality shine through your answers and interactions.

7. Ask Questions

An interview is a two-way street. Prepare a few questions to ask the agency. This shows that you are serious about your career and interested in how the agency operates. You might ask about their expectations, the types of clients they work with, or opportunities for growth within the agency.

8. Follow Up

After the interview, send a thank-you email to express your appreciation for the opportunity. This small gesture can leave a positive impression and keep you on the agency’s radar.

Conclusion

Preparing for an initial interview with a modelling agency can be nerve-wracking, but with the right preparation, you can make a strong impression. By researching the agency, preparing your portfolio, dressing appropriately, practicing your walk and poses, and being ready to answer and ask questions, you can set yourself up for success.
